"Mafia look at little child. Mafia see loser." |
Weapons are a type of items found in A Hat in Time as Hat Kid's main method of offence throughout the game. In the base game, the only usable weapon is the Umbrella originally owned by a Mafia Goon at the very beginning of the game. However, if the player owns DLC or plays the Live Game Events, they can obtain more weapons, albeit only for cosmetic purposes.
Overview[]
Hat Kid does not immediately obtain a weapon at the beginning of the game, only being able to punch. Being an ineffective method in attacking enemies, punching will result in Hat Kid wincing in pain and jumping up and down before returning to her typical state. Only until the end of the end of Mafia Town's first Act "Welcome to Mafia Town" will Hat Kid obtain an actual weapon.
The main usage of weapons is to frantically swing in the direction Hat Kid is facing towards, creating a large arc in front of her that damages enemies normally vulnerable to attacks and causing non-enemy NPCs to squeak and bounce in place.
Weapons can attack in a set of three swings when tapping the attack button rapidly, with two acting as complete swings while the third swings midway before stopping directly in front of Hat Kid. This three attack burst can be very helpful with dispatching enemies with high health like Mafia Goons, as well as attacking quickly enough that some bosses can be hit several times before returning to their typical state. This ability to attack twice or thrice is further aided by the Time Stop Hat.
Weapons can be upgraded to have unique special abilities using Badges. Specifically, the Badge Seller can sell the Hover Badge to prevent Hat Kid from taking fall damage using the equipped weapon and the Projectile Badge to allow the weapon to fire a beam. A weapon can also be used as a hookshot after equipping the Hookshot Badge from the Subcon Well, clinging to and swinging from objects that support hookshots.

Trivia[]
- It is not possible for Player 2 to obtain an Umbrella unless Player 1 has lost all their health during the cutscene.
- If the player finds a Key, they will use it a temporary weapon, though it is functionally identical to the Umbrella in every way outside it's usage to unlock doors.
- If the player does the Kiss and Bleh taunts at the same time (press 1 and 4 at the same time on the PC, the up and down arrows on the Nintendo Switch, etc.) and they are equipping either the default Umbrella, the Gothic Umbrella, the Pool Noodle, the Catchmaster 9000, or the Trumpet they will do the Smug dance. If they are equipping the Baseball Bat, they will instead pose with the bat. Regardless of the weapon, the Peaceful Badge if equipped will still activate.
