A Hat in Time is a 3D action platformer by independent game development studio Gears for Breakfast. It is a self-described "Collect-a-thon" style game in the vein of Banjo-Kazooie and Super Mario 64. It is available on Windows and Mac OS X, as well as on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

It was successfully funded via Kickstarter on June 28, 2013, and earned a total of $296,360, well exceeding its initial $30,000 goal.[1] The game officially released via Steam on October 5, 2017.

Plot[]

On her space ride home, Hat Kid's ship is intercepted by a Mafia goon, who demands she pay a toll because she is over the Mafia Town. When Hat Kid refuses to pay, the Mafia member busts in through the window, causing Hat Kid and the ship's fuel, the time pieces, to be blown out into space. After landing in Mafia Town, Hat Kid must fight and work to recover her lost time pieces.

Trivia[]

  • By complete coincidence, A Hat in Time and Super Mario Odyssey share many similarities (aside from being the same genre); they both use hat-based abilities, both feature rideable scooters, and they were both released in October 2017.
  • The Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, Xbox One versions are rated T instead of E10
  • The Nintendo Switch version is currently the only one that has a retail release.
  • A Wii U version was on the developers’ minds ever since the Kickstarter, but due to a number of issues, such as the cost of licensing the engine, Unreal Engine 3’s poor support of the Wii U (in fact, Jonas Kerlev, the lead developer, mentioned in an interview that a large chunk of the game’s Kickstarter budget likely would have gone to just making the engine work on the Wii U), and the Wii U’s lifespan ending prior to the release of the game, it didn’t happen.
  • Hat Kid originally had an in-air spin attack in early builds. This was removed after the Alpha, the reasoning being that “people just spam it and don’t understand anything. Not only that, but it made enemies in the air vulnerable again.
  • Jonas Kærlev has stated that the name of the game came from a cut mechanic where Acts were connected on a timeline that could be diverted depending on how the act was cleared. The mechanic was dropped for making a start-to-end playthrough of the game too short
